Rochester Handbook:
Our final project is to make a “Rochester Handbook for New ALI Students”.  The purpose of this book is to provide useful information for new ALI students while they live in Rochester. Your experience in Rochester will help new ALI students have a fun, interesting and comfortable life here in Rochester. Each topic/information does not need to be long, but it must be two-three short paragraphs including the information below.
- pictures,
- details (business hours, website, phone number, address, costs etc...)
- highlight of the place, the reason why you recommend the place, why it’s important, personal experience, etc.

Did you pick the topic/information you want to write? If not, please read the information below.

The information that we are going to include in the book is below. Please check the lists and decide what information/topic you would like to write about.  Once you choose three topics/information you would like to write about, please let us know. If there is an initial next to the topic/information, it means that your classmates have already chosen the topic and started to write about it. In other words, you can’t choose a topic someone else is doing. “First come, first served.” If you have some other information you would like to write about, please let us know.

George Eastman and Kodak
Today we learned an overview of George Eastman, Eastman House and Kodak. Today’s class work and homework will help you understand and relate to what you will see and learn during the visit to the George Eastman house next Wednesday.

Assignments for Tuesday the 10th

Please review today’s vocabulary and notes then post one or two sentences for each topic: George Eastman’s life details, inventions, Kodak, philanthropy and house. Please use your own words and write about important facts or information.  You can include pictures if you want to. This post is due on Tuesday at midnight.

Assignments for Saturday the 14th

Choose 5 highlights of the Eastman House that you especially liked and/or think other people need to see. For each highlight, be sure to:
  • Describe what it is
  • Talk about what’s important or interesting about it
  • Include pictures
Example of how to write highlights
(please read this example before you write about the George Eastman House)

Highlights of the Zoo

One thing I really liked at the zoo was the tiger.  I love cats, and the tigers are so beautiful.  Many of the animals were just sleeping, but the tiger was walking around, and then she decided to sit in her pool.  It was fun to see a cat in the water.  The volunteer said that they can only let one tiger out at a time, so I’ll have to come back another time to see the other tiger.

It was exciting to see the polar bear.  They’re usually in their cave, so it was a treat to see one out.  The polar bear’s habitat at the zoo has a swimming pool with glass so you can see them under water.  The bear didn’t swim while I was there, though.  I wonder how they cope with such hot weather.

Blogs, board games and stuff...

May 30th, 2012

For the first half of the class on Friday, we will have time to catch up with any missing blog posts and comments to your classmates etc... Then we will give you a topic to research and blog about. Please bring your laptop to work on, if you can. If not, we will have laptops for you.

For the rest of the class, we are going to play some board games, like Life, Pictionary etc...

Why board games??
Board games are quite popular, not only for children, but also for adults in America. It is common for friends and family to get together and play games and have a good time. There are even groups playing certain games in the community as well.  Let’s get to know some of the popular American board games!
